Opportunities for Locums
Alberta Medical Association (AMA) Physician Locum Services (PLS)
Note: Family/General Practice and Specialist Locum Opportunities are also available through the Alberta Physician Link - These are often posted a longer term locums.
AMA Physician Locum Services (PLS) provides locum relief to physicians practicing in eligible communities in rural Alberta to allow for better work-life balance and increased physician retention within a small community. PLS has three locum programs for rural family physicians:
- Regular Locum Program - provides weekend and weekday office and emergency room coverage
- Weekend Locum Program - provides weekend coverage of rural emergency rooms in communities with less than five physicians
- Senior's Weekend Program - provides coverage for physicians older than 54 years of age, who have worked in rural Alberta for nine or more years, and who practice in communities with fewer than 16 physicians.
There is also a Specialist Locum Program that provides specialist physicians practicing in Alberta’s regional centres with periodic locum relief.
There is a lot of flexiblity to work as a locum in the Physician Locum Services programs. When working as a PLS locum, there is no minimum number of assignments to provide, nor a service time/term required from you as a locum. Being an AMA locum does not preclude you from doing private locums or other work.
Remuneration & Benefits: PLS provides a very competitive daily income guarantee. Any fee-for-service and/or on call payments exceeding the guarantee are paid to locums. Locum’s travel costs - flights/rental cars are fully covered by the program. In addition, a travel honoraria is paid: $250 for air/ground travel of less than 4 hours/400km; $500 for air/ground travel of more than 4 hours/400 km i.e. $500 to $1,000 for your round trip. Accommodation is provided to locums while on assignment. PLS staff will book flights/rental cars for locums. Alberta Medical Association AMA Physician Locum Services
