Social Insurance Number (SIN) – A Requirement
You and your family members will need to apply for and receive a Social Insurance Number (SIN) card in order to work in Canada, to open a bank account or to obtain a tax refund. Your employer will require this number.
To get an application, simply go to the nearest Canada Post office or Human Resources and Skills Development Canada office (to find your nearest office, look in the blue pages of your telephone book). Name changes through either marriage or change of name must have supporting documents. You will need to show your birth certificate, Canada Immigration visa (Record of Landing) and passport. There is a small administrative fee. Forms are also available through many immigrant-serving agencies.
