Health Care Insurance Coverage – A Requirement

The Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) is a provincial government program that provides Albertans with full coverage for medically-necessary physician and hospital services, as well as partial coverage for a variety of other health care services. You and your family must register with the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan within three months of your arrival in Alberta.

Alberta healthcare coverage is available from the first day you arrive in Alberta, provided your Canada entry papers are in order and you apply within three months. Separate cards are issued for each member of the family. Your healthcare number is permanent and it is important not to lose the cards. These cards must be presented when you visit doctors’ offices, laboratories, hospitals and health clinics.
