Education

Rural physicians and their families will be interested in educational opportunities. Most children go to a public, separate (mostly Roman Catholic), francophone or charter schools. All of these schools are funded by municipal property taxes and provincial government revenues.

Spouses may be interested in continuing their education, enhancing skills, developing interests or adding to their qualifications. Information about educational options available for both children and adults is available on the Government of Alberta websites of Alberta Education and Alberta Advanced Education and Technology and the Alberta Home and School Council Association website. Topics include:

  • Early Childhood (pre-school and day care standards, Registered Education Savings Plans, special needs, early literacy, etc.),
  • Kindergarten to Grade 12 (curriculum, information for parents, Learning Resources Centre, technology including distance learning, etc.),
  • Post-Secondary (Colleges, Technical Institutes and Universities),
  • Apprenticeship and Industry Training,
  • Community Adult Learning, and
  • Links to other websites.

The Alberta Home Education Association website includes resources for families either already home schooling or looking into it.

The Athabasca University website outlines the individualized courses and programs available through “Canada’s leading distance-education and online university.”

The Universities of Alberta and Calgary also offer distance-education programming.
